Every move you make is powered by one of two engines.

Intrinsic motivation comes from inside. You do the thing because the work itself feeds you — curiosity, craft, meaning, the feeling of getting better.

Extrinsic motivation comes from outside. You do the thing for what it gets you — money, likes, a title, approval, or to avoid a penalty.

Neither one is “good” or “bad.” They’re tools. The problem starts when you don’t know which one is steering.

Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan built a whole framework around this — Self-Determination Theory. Their research points to three needs that keep inner drive alive: autonomy (I chose this), competence (I’m getting better at this), and relatedness (this connects me to people who matter).

When those three are fed, you keep going after the applause stops. When they’re missing, you need bigger and bigger rewards just to show up.

Ask yourself about any goal on your list:

“Yes, yes, more” = intrinsic. “No, no, less” = extrinsic. A mix is normal. Just be honest with the scorecard.

The strongest builders don’t pick one. They let the inner engine choose the direction and let the outer engine set the deadlines. Love the craft — and still put a price tag and a due date on it.

That’s Step 1 of the Hy8pe 8-Step Success Strategy: Set the Target like Madam C. J. Walker. She built products she believed in and set hard numbers for the business. Purpose plus proof.

Write down your #1 goal. Under it, write one inner reason (why it matters to you) and one outer reward (what it gets you). Keep both where you’ll see them daily. When one engine stalls, the other gets you to the next step.

Small steps. Big shift.

Photo by Piret Ilver on Unsplash.

Two engines move you: the one inside and the one outside.
