Remember why you started? Before the clients, the pricing, the algorithm — there was just you and the work. That pull is intrinsic motivation: doing something because doing it is the reward.

For creatives and small-business owners, it’s the most valuable fuel you own. It’s also the easiest to lose.

How inner drive gets crushed

In a classic 1973 study, researchers Lepper, Greene, and Nisbett gave kids who already loved drawing a reward for drawing. Later, those kids drew less on their own time than kids who weren’t promised anything. The reward turned play into a job.

It’s called the overjustification effect, and adults fall into it too. When every project becomes about the numbers, the love can quietly leave the room.

How to protect it

  1. Keep one “just because” project. Something you make with no client, no price, no post required.

  2. Own your choices. Autonomy fuels drive. Even on paid work, find one decision that’s fully yours.

  3. Track skill, not just sales. Note what you got better at this week. Mastery is its own reward.

  4. Find your people. Share the work with others who get it. Connection keeps the fire lit.

    Stoic roots

Marcus Aurelius wrote about doing your work well because it’s your work — not for praise. That’s intrinsic motivation, 1,800+ years early. Applause is nice. It just can’t be the reason.

    The Hy8pe connection

This is the heart of Step 5: Create like Jim Henson. Henson kept making strange, joyful, personal work for decades — and built an empire on it. Passion first, then structure around it.

    Your one small shift

Block 30 minutes this week for a project nobody asked for. No posting. No pricing. Just make something. Then write one sentence about how it felt.

Protect the fire. Build around it.
